No Place Like Home

A house fit for a mouse?

Well, yes and no. Britain’s smallest house was only declared inhabitable for humans in 1900. For around 400 years prior to this, this quayside home in Conwy, North Wales had a number of residents, including families.

The most recent was a fisherman named Robert Jones, who at 6ft 3inches tall, truly tested the dimensions of the property. The house is a tiny 72 inches wide, 122 inches high, and 120 inches deep yet still manages to consist of two floors, with a bedroom upstairs and living area below.

It had never been intended to build a house of this size. Rather, a local builder had identified a gap between existing structures that would require the addition of only a front wall and roof to form a home. At a time when there was high demand for housing in the town, this was an opportunity that could not be ignored.
